Everyday Math
By Lizzy

Clip to ScrapBook
Our school has adopted Everyday Counts and Everyday math. My math consumes 75 min a day. My students are mostly ESOL and are way behind in the basic number concepts and even identifying numerals past 11. I never get to finish
an entire lesson of activities 1-3. Since this is our first year, I think the spiraling of lessons will help and also since the kiders are exposed to many of the concepts next year may prove more successful.
To help things move along, I have put each math box on a transparency so the kids know where we are on the page! I have modeled the first 12 math boxes and we do them together.
Also, I am now focusing on the main objective of the lesson (usually part 1) and have made my own morning math boxes for a review of concepts. Using flash cards daily sounds good, we also try to use a ball to pass to each other as we count by 1's as high as we can as we sit in a circle. So far our oral counting has gone to 50. To get them familiar with writing the numerals, I occassionally take out white boards as ask them to write the numerals , say, 9-15, then I write them and they check their work. I have even taken out a few days from the curriculum to work with 100 boards and transparent chips. I might say "cover all the numbers that you say when you count by 5's".
What do you do to boost their money combination abilities? That seems to be the toughest.
