shaping up!
By deb

Clip to ScrapBook
If you do take pictures, photograph the child pointing to the shape. You can make a neat "We're Shaping Up!" book. Glue each picture on an large index card and label each picture. (Example: Deb's square) Then go over
the shape in the picture with a black permanent marker. Bind the book and share. Always a favorite at rest and read!
Another idea is to teach the following shape songs. (tune: Farmer in the Dell) Practice the songs as you practice the shapes in fingerpaints. My class loved this activity!
Rectangle: A rectangle has 4 sides
A rectangle has 4 sides
2 sides long and 2 sides short
A rectangle has 4 side
Square A square is like a box
A square is like a box
It has 4 sides, they are the same
A square is like a box
Triangle A triangle has 3 sides
A triangle has 3 sides
Up the mountain, down and back
A triangle has 3 sides
Circle A circle's like a ball
A circle's like a ball
Round and round, it never stops
A circle's like a ball

We end the unit by making a shape sandwich: 2 squares for bread with crayon colored crust, a red finger-painted circle for tomato, a brown sponged rectangle for meat, a yellow markered triangle with holes punched out for cheese, and green thumb-printed ovals for pickles or lettuce. Of course, the class traces their own shapes and cuts them out as well. We glue on labels to each piece and staple together. Bon appetit!
