We are into our second year at school of teaching and using letterland. We use it across Reception to Year 2. I find it particularly easy for the children who have trouble remembering their sounds. I have a Year 1/2 class| who all have individual spelling words. We have a formal lesson once a week to intorduce a specific sound and do an activity around that sound. The children look forward to this lesson every week. When I am conferencing their work I will ask them what other characters can make a specific sound if they have spelt a word incorectly. It makes it well worth it when I heard one of my | | slow learners say the other day that is not right an ea make an ee sound. So I though we must be doing something right. I teach all the ways you can make ee and then all the ways you can make er. I find this works really well. The teacher programmes are really useful as they give you loads of ideas. We have also had a few parent information nights where we talk to the parents about Letterland and this has been really useful as parents have actually bought a lot of the bits and pices for themselves. I would also highly recommend the alphabet freeze. We also learn the letters in handwriting. As a parent with a 5 and 4 year old they love it. We have the book and cd rom at home and they use it all the time. They love the songs. I highly recommend the programme and just get bits and pieces at a time.
