Amanda, We use in our district in NJ a Balanced Literacy approach to reading and writing. It is our district's belief that reading and writing go hand in hand. We have a literacy block every morning in our classrooms| which combine a varied literacy curriculum. I am a K teacher and this is how my morning goes...I begin my literacy block with Message time (the CLI approach) and from there I have literacy centers. All centers are based on literacy activities and a writing activity is incorporated into each. Eventually, probably around November this will be the time slot that I will take groups for Guided | | Reading. In our K the children actually are assessed by DRA and placed into groups. The groups are very mobil and children are constantly being tested and moved around according to DRA. We use the material from the Wright Group. We also have a shared reading component which I place in my center activities. We do three or more read alouds per day and have a Daily Writing workshop following target writing skills. We do Interactive writing, modeled writing ,journals with the children as well. For phonics we use Orton Gillingham. Our curriculum is literacy centered so even our science and social studies programs have a literacy component to them. I know I am going over this really quickly, so if you have any further questions or need something explained in more depth, please just ask....with our Guided reading we have a very complete making words, cutting sentences technique that we use with the children. We have seen such progress....Our assessment this year is a combination of Dibels and Observational Survey.
