To help them be prepared, I put an agenda on the board each morning that tells them D.E.A.R. then just under it LANGUAGE ARTS then under that RECESS then MATH, etc. They know that every math class starts with mental math, so when kids come in, they can get out their campfire book and number the page from 1-10, also writing the date at the top. IF I come in form recess and a kid is sitting there with the book open and ready, and they are giving me a silent signal (hands folded together on top of the desk), they get rewardeed with a happy face. It is amazing how important routines are for them! Silent signal is something I use often. I also tell them pencils down when I need their attention. And we do Give me five, which means hand in the air, silent, pencil down, hands free, and be still so you can listen. (Even shuffling feet and papers stop very quickly!) It took practice practice prractice!
