noise help By Brooke

I teach 2nd grade and have 38 students. I team teach, so there is always another teacher in the room as well. We had a problem with noise also. I try to remember that there are 38 students, almost double the amount in a| normal size classroom. I started looking around the room and the students actually aren't very loud. It is the combination of so many students that make it seem loud. When I taught first grade I had a secret walker in line. This would be a person that I chose for the day and I would watch this person in line. The kids did not know who it was until the end of the day. If the secret walker | | did what he/she was supposed to in line then he/she would get a stamp on the hand. The kids loved this and responded very well. Something I do in my room this year for classroom noise control, is using a marble jar. We start with an empty jar on Monday. The students have to fill the jar up with marbles by Friday if they would like to earn "free choice". I give handfuls of marbles for task the students complete well. Ex. if they work quietly, walk in line correctly, etc. I also take marbles out. If I think it is too loud I walk to the jar and move the marbles around and start to take them out 1 at a time. I normally only have to take 1 or 2 out and they are quiet. It works great. Free choice is where the students can play with games, art, computers, etc. in the room for 30 minutes on Friday afternoon. They only get this if they fill the marble jar. If you have any questions just ask.
