    Lily,
I couldn't agree with you more! I do not believe in the homework packets either...I have "teacher" friends who make their kids do it all in one night just to get it done! So if they are doing that....

Anyways, I heard a "mix" of things at parent-teacher conferences. Some parents were happy the kids didn't have busy work to do, others were thankful that the kids weren't burden with an hour of homework. (Some were concerned of the huge jump in curriculum from 2nd to 3rd and were worried that the expectations of the homework amount increased) The biggest impact that a comment had on me was from two "working mothers" who appreciated me not having a packet and giving them time to be with their child when they got home. They were then able to give their child "quality" time that they needed.

Just to let you know what I assign is:
Each night I send home the "home links" from Every Day Math and also have the students complete a weekly reading log. (They have a reading goal and need to read 20 minutes each night.)
I don't know if this is not enough, etc. But as it was stated in the above...families are not the same as they were! The working mothers and fathers really want to spend time with their children doing "family" activities and not just "homework".

It's a debate that will go on forever. I am not sure what state you are from, but in the Ohio Education Association magazine members receive, this was a topic this month!!!
(They suggested going with the rule of 10 minutes per night for each grade level.
    2nd grade= 20 minutes.)

    Hang in there!
