Things to focus on By Sally

I usually focus on writing names I start with block and dot and tracing. We do daily journals if the child can write. Addition with touch math and maniputlatives is good. I teach caluculator skills by having the children| check their math with a calculator and stamp or make a smiley or sad face on the problems they got right or wrong. Or circle if they got it wrong and stamp if they got it right. I also work on sorting skills some weeks when I have things prepared way in advance I have the students collate and staple work that needs to be done like their daily journals. I used to do a coupon cutting | | and sorting. A lot of faculty members donated their left over coupon ads and we would high light the coupon with a marker and have the children cut coupons then sort them using just a box and cut off milk cartons then to top it off we pasted coupons on the outside of it and placed it in the faculty lounge. This can teach consumer skills sorting, numbers, etc. Dressing skills, money skills, get some play money and have them sort nickels, dimes, quarters, pennies, name them and the value. Get a bunch of items put price tags on them and have the children count out dimes, nickels or pennies to the amount. Even little cards with pictures on it to show the coin for the amount. Sequencing to a book that they have read - what came first second third. Categorizing what mode of transportation flies, floats, or drives.... Get creative and have fun. I tried not to babble too much but I hope this helps. Calendar skills - days of the week use a chart to put them in order same with the months of the year. Beginning sounds. ETC...
