How much is too much? By Carolyn

I think everybody's idea of "too much" is different. I try to be out of school by 3:15 each day, approximately 1/2 hour after the children leave. I spend a little bit of time cleaning up my desk and organizing for the next| day. I won't work past 8:00 in the evening on school stuff, because I feel that I owe myself some time away from school. I figure that I'm there for 8 hours, so I've put in my shift. Unless I have tests to grade or report cards to do, I try to fulfill my promise to myself to not work too late on school stuff. I think that if you feel you are burning out on school stuff, then | | it's time to find shortcuts. Don't do so much paper correcting. I have my students grade their own homework as we go over it, and we also go over classwork. I have already explained to my students' parents that I don't correct homework and classwork. I will look at it, but that's about it. The students will receive a grade for completing the homework. I have 25 students, so each student's papers times 25 would equal a lot of time spent on correcting if I didn't have the kids do it. I only grade projects, quizzes, and tests, and I have learned to simplify the grading process by using a rubric for projects and not creating tests and quizzes which take a long time to grade. I also find reliable children to do certain tasks for me, which saves on time, also. My fifth grade students love to play teacher's helper. It's work for them, but for some reason they enjoy it. You don't want to ignore your family by doing a lot of school work. If you have children, they need you, too.
