Clip to ScrapBook
I use a large wall on the outside of the library. I have a picture of Uncle Sam with "UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU TO READ FOR THE RED, WHITE, AND BLUE. One side of the wall is for K-2 and the other side is for 3-5. Students earn
read and blue stars based on the number of books read and tests passed. K-2 get a star for every 5 points and 3-5 get a star for every 10 points. Colors are alternated. When k-2 reach 25 points they get a special star. For 3-5 it is 50 points. This is a white star with shiny star stickers on it. The kids really like this, but it is very time consuming--die cutting stars. Next year
I think I will have a poster for each homeroom with every child's name on it. As they earn a star, I will just put a stick-on star (from Walmart) beside their name.
I also list every teachers name on another wall. Weekly, as above, I check to see who has the best reading average (percentage based on number of books and correct answers). I award a first and second place die cut award for the class in each area (k-2 and 3-5). Then I award the class in each section that has read the most books. Of course, they have to pass the test for the book to count.
Next, I type a list of the highest point holder (number of books) in each homeroom with the number of points that they have.
At the end of the year, I plan to award a trophy for the highest point holder in each class and an overall trophy for the highest point holder in the school. I also plan to give a rotating trophy to the class with the best record.
