Making the Jump
By Kasey

Clip to ScrapBook
I'm in my 4th year of teaching after a few other careers. My cousin teaches 5th grade now, but graduated with a finance degree (it was the only degree her dad would pay for). She went back to school for her Masters after
10 years of banking and hating it. She teaches in a tough area, but wouldn't go back for anything. I've always been in the human services area (YMCA, etc.), but also wouldn't go back for anything. Don't be put off by what you read in The Vent. Remember, these people have had a tough day, and are doing just that...venting...to other people who have probably had a much better day, but
know what they are going through. I am also amazed by some of the horror stories I hear on The Vent. The other side of the coin is where I presently reside...great class of 3rd graders...great supportive parents who want the best for their kids (and I just came off of parent conferences and can still say that!)...super Principal who lets me do my job and just wants to know what he can do to make my job easier...fun colleagues who all get along in spite of quirks...great support staff who would be wonderful teachers themselves but don't want to have to go get the degree...etc. I'm in a state with massive budget cuts (Oregon), but I still have a job, and I'm only just out of my 3 years of probation. Keep all you hear in perspective, and follow your dreams. It's kind of like being pregnant...everyone wants to tell you their labor horror stories. Don't sweat the small stuff. Good luck! P.S. If you really want to find out if it's for you, VOLUNTEER at a few schools (not just one, cuz every school is so different). You would be welcomed with open arms!
