Clip to ScrapBook
I have a muslim girl this year so when I used pizzas for a fraction activity I had to make sure that there were no pork products used in the pizzas. Last year I had a student that wasn't allowed sugar so I always had a supply
of sugar free lollies. I have used mini smarties ( they're like M&M's )packets to graph the colours in each little packet and the number of lollies in each box. Fruit wedges for fractions - cutting up apples etc. Mandarins are good for this and it's interesting to see how many wedges are in different varieties and sizes. A science activity with bananas - how to divide it exactly
into thirds ( the trick is to jam your thumb firmly in the tip of the banana and push gently and it splits into thirds - messy but fun ) eggs for the floating egg and rubbery egg experiments in science and lemons for the invisible ink experiment. Other food science activities include making popcorn and what makes it pop and measuring the water content etc; How heating some things changes them, like eggs, whereas some other things you can heat and they stay the same. Using celery and coloured water to show how plants suck up water; Cutting up apples and leaving them for a bit shows how air can affect certain things but it still tastes the same; growing mould in the classroom using pumpkin and bread; investigating and tasting foods that are fungi or have mould or bacteria in them to make them - soft cheeses, yoghurt, mushrooms etc. I use simple cooking recipes for maths measuring activities and special foods for special days for social studies like pancakes for Shrove Tuesday, Corned meat and potatoes for St Patrick's Day and the older classes when they do their countries around the world theme they have a cooking or a food tasting component in that as well. That's all I can remember at the moment. I hope that helps.
