Re: Sub
By Lisa

Clip to ScrapBook
Irene,
I think the process varies a little bit for each town and state but here in CT I have signed up with 4 towns this year and the hiring was fairly similar for all 4, just to give you an idea. I called the Board of
Ed office for each town I was interested in and indicated that I was interested in signing up to be a substitute teacher in their system and the secretary would kind of explain their process: whether I should come in to the office to fill out paperwork, attend a meeting or they would simply send me the paperwork to fill out and bring back. Basically I would just fill out a form indicating
what grades I wanted to sub in, subjects, days available, whether or not you have a degree and are certified, etc and for some towns a teacher application with references. Only for one town did I have a meeting with a personnel director but the others I just dealt with the secretary and they set the whole thing up for me. The "interview" I can't offer you much advice on as far as questions because my one experience was more of her telling me about the town and looking over my resume and explaining their phone call system: that is, there was really no question of whether or not I would be added to the sub list, as long as I met the criteria of being certified and my fingerprints came back clear, I was in their system. I'm not sure if it is this easy everywhere to sign up for subbing or if there really is more of an interview for some places (if only it were that easy to get a full-time teaching job! LOL) but also as I mentioned, you need to get fingerprinted at a local police dept on cards that the school will give you or they may offer the service there and as long as the background check is clear, you're ready to sub! Hope this helped give you a bit of an idea.
