kteacher,
I have been where you are having taught for 30 years and having gone through countless transitions.....as my principal tells me, the only constant in education is change. We have been doing balanced literacy
for over three years, and although I am no expert I would be glad to help you in any way I can. Would this reading/writing activity be a center activity or whole group? Look to Marcia Freeman for some great writing activities. I wrote our Kindergarten Writing curriculum this summer and she has been my salvation.....A good activity is to take the Newbridge Science Big Book called Bubbles,
Bubbles everywhere and have the children go outside with you and take pictures of them using their bubbles with a digital camera. Perhaps, you could do this ahead of your principal's visit. Read the Big Book with the children and look for strong verbs...thumbs up when they hear one. Do a mini on Strong verbs....Children to go to a table and choose a picture they want to write about. Have them orally tell you about their picture. Make sure they state one SV.Have them go to their seats, name and target of SV on their papers. Paste the picture on the paper to use as a picture prompt. Have them write about their picture. Go around while they are writing and give them a hole punch for anything positive they can write. Help as needed. Then have them go back up to your Author chair and read to the class what was written. This is voluntary and not all children need to read work. I don't know when he intends to come in, but if you need center writing ideas or anything please contact me. Like I said, I have been there...if time permits, read some of Marcia Freeman's books on writing or materials on 6 trait writing. These could help you. Marcia Freeman has a website: www.Marcia freeman.com and you can get information on 6 trait through the University of oregon website on writing. If you wish to ask questions, feel free. I am sure by now you have come up with a wonderful lesson of your own.
