beware GeoCities
By Sari

Clip to ScrapBook
I like GeoCities and have used it to create sites, but some filtering software blocks sites with geocities in the URL. Here is a really easy service for creating a Web site that I have never seen blocked.

http://wizard.hprtec.org/index.php3

It
is somewhat limited, but it is free. Take the time to experiment with it. I discovered some new features (such as the ability to have multiple pages!) several months after I first discovered the site. I don't think it can count "hits" though.

If you know anything about HTML, you might want to try 0Catch.com

(that is a zero, not the letter O). It is not easy to use, but it is much more versatile. They do have pay services, but there is also a free option. A similar service is topcities.com.

I created a site in Microsoft Word and then uploaded it to these services (just experimenting). The trick is that if you have any pictures or other special objects, you may need to alter the HTML code. I don't know HTML, but a colleague helped me figure out enough to alter that part of the code. If you have some knowledge of HTML (or any computer language) and would like to try out these sites, e-mail me and I'll tell you what I did. (Please put ProTeacher in the subject line.) Also, you cannot "hotlink" to these sites (unless you pay), meaning you can't have a link from another service. You would have to give out the URL you create for this service.

If you don't know what I'm talking about or want to stick to something simple, use the http://wizard.hprtec.org/index.php3 site. It is easy and looks professional. You can have one picture per page (must be a jpeg or a gif to upload-easy to convert to this form-again, e-mail if you have any questions).

Sorry this is so long. There is SO much out there about designing Web sites.

By the way, you can reply here instead of e-mailing if you want. (I know the editors prefer that!) I check this site often.
