I have my students create and maintain portfolios of their writing. I first decide what types of things I expect to see in their portfolio (i.e. poem, persuasive piece, business letter, etc.) I then have the students create baseline samples of each item. This can easily be done during the first couple weeks of school. I then usually start with the friendly letter and business letntermediate
