Would a "A Second Grade Picnic With Mrs C." theme work with your gingham? You could use a picnic table cloth instead of bulletin board paper, staple on colorful paper plates with their name (add photo later) and some trails of ants. Books could be stored in wicker baskets that month, and you can use plastic picnic cups or glasses to hold your calendar materials. I could see a beach theme too, with sandpails and beach umbrella.
