small classes

I teach in an independent school in North Carolina, and our maximum class size is 18. I think it makes a huge difference in my ability to differentiate and simply get to know my students.

On the other hand, though, there is such a thing as a class being too small. I once had a class of seven students! It was very difficult to get a group dynamic going. It also made social problems worse because the kids had very few alternatives when they didn't get along well with someone.
