I usually send a post card to welcome my students. Then I tell them one thing we will do on the first day (or week). I also send a letter to the parents with expectations for my classroom. I enclose a name tag for their child to make it easier for me to locate my students in the school yard on the 1st day. I also wear a matching name tag. One year we had 2 students with the same first and last names. I knew which "Johnny" was my student because he was wearing the name tag!
