My students loved the following books:

Holes
Where the Red Fern Grows (claim it was their favorite!)
Number the Stars (great for WWII)
The Cay (also historical fiction about WWII)
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
My Brother Sam is Dead (Revolutionary War)
The Kid in the Red Jacket (great read aloud for beginning of school!)
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

I think that's it. I enjoy them myself!! I'm thinking about doing A Wrinkle in Time, but haven't read it myself yet!
