My absent procedure

I have folders labeled "We Missed You." In the beginning of the school year, I tell each student that if their classmate sitting next to them is absent, they are responsible for placing all handouts in the folder for their classmate. The folder is then placed in the absent student's mailbox at the end of the day. If the student is absent on the next day, that same student must retrieve the folder that he/she placed in the mailbox and continue collecting handouts. The students know that if they are absent to check their mailboxes upon return. I hope this makes sense to you.
