oral communications
By Sari

Clip to ScrapBook
I have two idea "seeds," but nothing specific.

1) Have them try to communicate complex ideas without using any words.

2) Write out some ambiguous phrases, and have them guess as to how to inflect the phrases based only on the written words. (Maybe you could even address the use of "emoticons" in e-mail and IMs. The "smiley face" characters were developed precisely because people found they could not communicate subtleties, such as sarcasm, with words alone.)

These two activities should help them to appreciate 1) how valuable language (specifically precise language)is and 2)how important vocal inflection and body signals are.
