its one of the most difficult things about teaching the cognitively impaired students....they have mental ages of 1-2 yr olds and yet we want them to learn from manipulatives for their chronological age....its somewhat similar like asking us at a college level, to learn using tinker toys isnt it? or asking our kindergartners to learn using a protractor or calculator right off the bat....it does not match!! Do the best you can..pick and choose and do what feels right for the student and you.....explain your thoughts at most times with your aide ....she will either understand and cooperate or you have a rigid helper....been there, done that....
