snack/break
By Amie

Clip to ScrapBook
I teach 5th grade, and I generally give a 10-15 minute snack/break in the morning around 10:00 AM. The kids have to bring their own food if they want to eat; most do. (Our kindergarten and first grade classes do group snack, and parent volunteers provide the food.)

I worry about the teaching time lost too, but I think it's important for the kids to have a little time to decompress before we move on to more work. Also, I find that this is the time when the kids tend to chat with me. It gives me a chance to connect with them and find out what's going on in their lives.
