I give a quick simple assessment to give me a ballpark. Then I try a book a little below where I think they are so they will feel successful. If they can read that I give them a more difficult book. I find it is not necessary to have them read the whole book to get an idea, a selection is just fine. Since guided reading groups are changeable, I find if I need to move a student it is not difficult.

Start with your district or state assessment. If you feel that doesn't give you a good idea try another. I use the TPRI (my state's assessment) and supplement with portions of the Observation Survey.
