I have an article from Scientific American about reading (March 2002) which touches on the subject and gives you the first few(m,a,t,h,p,n,c,d,s). I could give you the order that Open Court uses, which is research based, however, it is also very program dependent. With OC we teach all the spellings to each sound, blends and digraphs not usually seen in first grade specific instruction. So it would be a bit complicated to emulate without the program. I'm sure you could find some research though that would help you know which order to introduce. Suffice it to say, you want to stick to the simplest or most useful patterns early on.
