Yes, you should tell your principal. Before you do however, have the following in place:
A general outline of how you plan to cover the year in your classes.
An idea of how the sub will cover the topics required in your absence.
An offer to e-mail the sub on a regular pre-set schedule during your maternity leave.
A mention of how you are going to deal with childcare upon your return.
While the principal may not be thrilled, going into this meeting very well prepared will send the message that you take your profession seriously and that you are concerned about your students in your absence.
Good luck on your first year teaching and the new baby!!
