Just placed in 4/5th grade self-contained

Beth, I know the feeling. I just got placed with a 4th/5th grade self-contained class in NYC with primarily LD and am freaking out a bit.

Brainstorm some categories together dealing with everyday things (pets, brothers/sisters). Then pair up children and do a Venn diagram on newsprint or butcher paper using different colored markers (Student 1, Student 2, Both). You may want to model the VENN diagram, perhaps if there is an odd number of students, you could compare yourself and that student so he/she doesn't feel left out. Or model with your para, if you have one. It is very complicated to do a 3 way VENN, I wouldn't advise it.
