morning work

my 1st graders work in their journals. we use wide-lined notebooks and at the beginning of the year they write all over the lines but by the end of the year they fit their words into the space. i always write the date and Today is-- on the board. then they use the word wall to write sentences of their own. at the beginning of the year they write 2-3 sentences with a picture-at the end of the year they are able to write about a subject. i never grade or correct their journals-i believe the assessment is the progress that they see as the year progresses. i also encourage parents to save their journals and put them on display for their child's high school graduation-
