Think marks
By Mary Ann

Clip to ScrapBook
An idea I got from Fountas and Pinnell is "Think Marks." They can be used for bookmarks and have space on them for the kids to write on while they read. They are instructed to write down thoughts and ideas while they read. They may write down interesting parts, funny parts, things they don't understand, new words, parts they liked, and so on. They must also write down the page that part is on, and the reasons why they chose it. My kids are 5th graders so when I give them their reading assignment I usually say that they need to write 2 think mark ideas per chapter. (Depending of course on the number of pages per chapter. Then when they get together they must each share what they wrote. It usually leads to some pretty good discussions.
