I agree with Susan! PROCEDURE them to death over the first few days! It may seem ridiculous, but it is so worth it in the long run!
I start the school year off by reading "Oh the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss to my 5th graders. I also end the year reading the same book. The kids love the book, and (sort of) get the life message. We talk about different choices that they will need to make throughout their year, and that their success is entirely up to them! It's also a good reference later for students who might not be making such good choices...I always tell them that they have the power to turn things around. Hope this helps! Good luck and have a great year!
