I also teach in CA. We just started using the program last year and I remember having the same overwhelming feeling. I have seen small groups (or I call them guided reading groups, I hope were still on the same page) done
a couple of ways. First, I seen them done with the anthologies for the "on level" students, the challenge books for the "above level" students and I used some of the second grade phonics library at the beginning for my lower leveled students.
I have also seen the anthology used as a whole class reader and leveled readers (such as Rigby or Scholastic books that go along with each
reading level) used during small groups.
Anyway that it is done, however, the HM program is so extensive and gives you almost too much to cover. I have just tried my best to fit it all in. Hope this helps!
