I also teach in CA. We just started using the program last year and I remember having the same overwhelming feeling. I have seen small groups (or I call them guided reading groups, I hope were still on the same page) done a couple of ways. First, I seen them done with the anthologies for the "on level" students, the challenge books for the "above level" students and I used some of the second grade phonics library at the beginning for my lower leveled students. I have also seen the anthology used as a whole class reader and leveled readers (such as Rigby or Scholastic books that go along with each | | reading level) used during small groups. Anyway that it is done, however, the HM program is so extensive and gives you almost too much to cover. I have just tried my best to fit it all in. Hope this helps!
