Clip to ScrapBook
I've subbed for the past three years in Michigan. The first two years, classroom teachers respected subs and went out of their way to help.
However, this past year, all you need to sub is to have half a college degree
(60 hours) in ANY subject. I live in a college town that specializes in turning out college teachers and we always have tons of subs. You'd think the quality of subs wouldn't go down in our town, but it has...a lot! and when the sub quality declined, our status as subs went down.
Many classroom teachers remain wonderfully helpful and welcoming to me, but they're getting tired
of leaving their class with incompetant subs who think they can control little kids by yelling at them.
My solution: School districts must DEMAND their subs have some training in classroom management ...or at least have a prior demonstrated interest in being around kids???
