I am reading a book right now that is on our State award nominee LIST (Mark Twain Award in Missouri) for this year, and I am thinking about reading it to my 5th graders. It's called TOUCHING SPIRIT BEAR by Ben Mikalelsen. I won't decide for sure until I finish reading it for myself, but so far I know it moves fast enough to keep my students interested.

Here is an excerpt on the back cover:
"Take an unforgettable journey with this troubled young teenager as he struggles to learn how to accept responsibility for his behavior and respect others -- as well as himself."

I think the theme is one that could inspire valuable, thoughtful conversations with our students, and it is filled with the excitement of a survival saga.

I'd love to hear if anyone else has read this book. If so, please share your thoughts.
