Clip to ScrapBook
I have been teaching for 17 years, 13 in K. It really works to allow the children to play for the first half hour of the day. A simple stop sign can be placed on any item in the room that you prefer not be used during this
time. I have found that the children ease into the day, don't ask, "When is play time?", and are truly eager to begin more formal activities when play time is over. It is also helpful for me to take attendance, reply to any parent notes sent in, not be "bothered" by children coming in late, and to observe the children. This is the time of day when I truly see what each child's interests
are, who they gravitate to, who uses time wisely, and who is able to keep themselves constructively busy. It allows each child to practice social skills and independence which we try so hard to foster. Give it a try!
