home visits--part 2
By leah

Clip to ScrapBook
After the children get their placement letters, I send a letter home in the middle of the summer, telling the dates that I want to visit and letting parents know when I will be calling to schedule the visits. Since they
know when my call is coming, they aren't surprised when I call. I visit each child for about 20 minutes. Basically, in my letter, I explain that I want to hear the parents' concerns and wishes for their child's year in first grade. I do not explain the curriculum or go over academic stuff while I'm on my home visits. I just meet the children and the parents and chat with them for a few
minutes. The phone calls are usually awkward! However, the home visits give you so much insight into the children and they go really fast. It does take a lot of time and energy but I think it is incredibly worthwhile.

This is the short version, but I hope it helps!
