I just bought a yacker tracker for my room. I got it at Lakeshore Learning Center for $40. It does switch on its own and you can set the decibals so if you are doing a silent reading time you can set the decibals low and if you are doing groups where talking is alright you can turn the decibals up. I have not used it but have known several teachers who have used it and loved it. They all said that it kept the childrens attention because they could see and hear if they were getting loud. Some of them would have a contest with the kids when it seemed to get a little old or that the self monitoring was getting a little weak. If they could go the whole day reaming either in green or yellow they would get a candy or if they went a whole week then they would get an extra recess. I hope this helps.
