cursive

Clip to ScrapBook
From a practical standpoint, I have to wonder at insisting that everything must be written in cursive. I agree that my students should be able to read and write cursive in 4th grade and beyond, but I agree with the former
poster that printing is much more of a life skill. Many of my students are not developmentally ready to write in cursive all the time when they come to me in August. What I do is require that for the first semester, all spelling work must be done in cursive. (This allows me to see who needs extra practice and help.) By second semester, my policy is that everything should be in cursive
(except math and rough drafts-their choice). If they forget now and again, it's really no big deal to me. I have colleagues who refuse to accept anything that's not in cursive, but I really don't see the point in that. I guess it's saying that you will follow my rules or else, but I feel that there are more important things to worry about.
