reading homework
By Katy

Clip to ScrapBook
Our district requires all elementary students to read every night. For 2nd graders, I ask 15-20 minutes minimum. Some teachers send home a reading log for students to complete. I do it on the honor system but I tell children
that the more they read, the better they will get at reading and therefore, they'll be able to access the kind of books they want to read. I did give out a bingo board that children could complete and return. The squares said things like "I read a nonfiction book," "I read a mystery," "I read a book by Tomie dePaola," etc. This encouraged children to read a variety of genres and authors,
including books that incorporated themes from our core science and s.s. units as well as author studies. They really liked it. As for grades, I don't grade h.w. I do offer feedback if the work is particularly reflective and well done or if it isn't meeting the standards I feel the child is capable of meeting... and I put a sticker on all work returned.
