I teach 5th grade and have to prepare for the SOLs! I love it. We have a lot of fun with the curriculum. I have been successful incorporating a lot of hands-on. Practice tests and test taking strategies are just another way of assessment. Quite honestly, I think it is a good idea that they learn them early. The students will be better prepared as they move up in their educational career. Testing won't go away, it will just follow them to their job, trade school or university.

Have fun with your students and make learning as interesting as possible. I present test taking strategies in a "game show" format. The students are well aware that 5th grade is a testing year. I'm sure they've been under pressure since the beginning of 3rd grade, not to mention that beginning next year or the year after, students will have to pass the SOLS to graduate.

Don't stress! If you are stressed, the students will stress. Use your curriculum thoroughly and have more fun teaching this year than any other.
