Lates and other things
By BrendaShooz

Clip to ScrapBook
Something that works for me: if a student is late, not working, etc. First I talk to them privately..next, I call their parents and make sure to say something positive first. Then I ask for help, as we are a team of 3. The
other thing I do (esp. for lates) is to get the student to write a page on why he/she was late- and sign it. This way they get to explain (some of these letters are hilarious) what happened to make them late..what choices they made, etc. I keep these papers and often yank them out during interviews so parents can read them. I don't let the kid back into my class until the paper is done.
Sometimes they laugh as I assign it, and the next day they walk in like they own the place. I say "can I have your comp. please? Huh??? Out you go until it's done. (They sit right outside the door and do it, then knock.)
After writing 3 or 4 of these things, they start coming in on time.
