Hey! I teach in Oregon, I'll be starting my fourth year this year. I got in right before the budget crunch, so I know what you're talking about. About helping the teacher...leave a thorough note about the day -- good and
bad news! Follow the plans, but as you said, be prepared with fillers. I call back guest teachers that show control of the class, but can have fun too. I have a list of about five guest teachers that I use continually. My students are always honest about a guest teacher, and usually very complimentary. The one sub I've never called back got the kids so wound up, it took two days

to bring them back down. He was more interested in being liked by the kids than getting the work done and staying on top of things. I understand why he's never been in a district more than a year as a contracted teacher. I subbed my first year, and I thought it was a great way to see all the schools in the district.
