The only rule I have in my 3rd grade room is:
1. We will show respect towards everyone and everything at all times.

Then I have the entire class sign the rule and I post it. Everything a child does when he/she misbehaves
can fall under this rule. If they talk in the hall they are disrespecting the other classes, writing on desks-disrespecting school property, not doing their homework-disrespecting themselves and the teacher. The list could go on. I spend a lot of time talking about this at the beginning of the year and do writing activites discussing respect and what it means.
At the end of the

year, when students begin to test the rules again I implment a program that allows students to earn R's. Randomly, I will say Johnny earned a R for raising his hand and respecting others in the class or Sally earned an R by picking up trash and respecting the playground, etc. I record them on a clip board. It keeps them working for me and following the rule. Then they use the R's to earn rewards.
