zero

Clip to ScrapBook
Zero the hero came to school
Zero the hero, he's no fool,
Zero the hero stays in his space,
So all the other numbers get in the right place.

Zero visits every 10th day, when we are bundling 10 sticks in our daily
count. I have a superman head and shoulders that came with a Halloween costume to display. We recite this poem together. I also have found a song. Then we find his bag - he brings round (like a zero), things like Cheerios, smarties, mini oreos, Froot Loops, mini ritz crackers, pennies, oranges, etc. (I usually have them already separated in 24 snack sized ziploc bags) and we use the
items to review counting by 2,5, or 10, we graph by color or size, we use them as arithmetic counters, or as markers in a bingo game. You can use them to measure too. Then we eat them of course! Once in an Olympic month, Zero brought gold medals (bulk from the dollar store)for everyone. The kids look forward enough to his coming that they start to notice how many days left til a "0"!
