6th grade is a terrific grade level to teach--i just love it!
As far as the classroom, I would definitely inform your administrator as soon as possible to let him/her know of your situation. They can hopefully help
with the "basics".
As for books, the above post mentioned Scholastic book points, which is terrific if your students order books. The best and CHEAPEST way that I have obtained books is from garage or yard sales--- and this time of year is the perfect time to pick up a ton of books!!! You can often purchase books that have only been read once for like 25 to 50 cents! What a deal! The
books that you purchase should vary slightly in reading level, as your students most likely will have a wide range of reading ability. This way you may even be able to use the books that you buy in a different grade level, if you are changed in the future.
