These are just a few suggestions that work for me. The first day or two of school spend time going over procedures. Know how you want them to do headings on papers, where to turn in work, homework policy, behavior policy,| hallway procedures, where everyone goes at the end of school, your expectations of them and the parents, etc. Also do "2nd grade" review pages, i.e. a phonics page, math inventory (maybe in your math TM) a handwriting sample, (we do a manuscript page now and then right before we start cursive...then a beginning cursive and at the end of school a cursive to compare). Let them use their | | "tools" a crayon page, a creative writing with illustration page, something that tells about them, their families, their "belongings"(which are important to them now). Read to them from a good book i.e. Chrysanthemum, where you could do graphing, tally marks, making a glyph of themselves, (maybe in the afternoon) to let them shift into neutral after being crammed full of so much info earlier in the day. I'm sure there are things I'm not remembering at present but maybe this is a start.
