This doesn't apply for everyday journal writing. For everyday writing practice I use a check minus, check, or check plus. I also grade most everyday work the same way. For math, I do use # grades based on 100%. Except for work done together (practice examples), I then use a stamp that says, done together in class. I believe we have to do a lot of observation, take anecdotal notes, and allow for many opportuntities to succeed. Grades are very subjective in second grade as they have not "mastered" many skills. I look for the total growth as well. Also, take a look at your school's report card. Find out how you have to report grades first, then set up a grading system that works for you.(for example - Satisfactory or letter grades) Satisfactory covers a large range. I also suggest that you post your rubrics, if any, and visually show clear criteria (model) of good work. This all helps. Hope this helps a bit. Good Luck.
