    learning centers

    Randi,
I have been teaching first grade-this is my seventh year-and the most important thing you can do to make your learning centers successful-no matter how many you have is to spend the first month of school teaching the children how to use them. Centers work when kids know what's expected of them-start out slowly-take baby steps-model, practice, model, practice, model, practice --well you know what I mean. I was just at a workshop last week and the presenter told us to take pictures of what the center looks like cleaned-up because the kids idea and your idea of "clean" are completely different. Also she suggested to take index cards and make them into "business" cards with the kids pictures on them and let them tell you what they are good at-then those kids become the "experts" that the students go to when they have questions-the ask 3 then ask me method.

I have reading (where kids read books), math, science, abc word study, poetry, writing, computer, blocks, games and read around the room.
If you want to know any other ideas specifically for what I do at the centers, just email me.
    Hope this helps. Amy
