Dean, you might want to check if your desks can be made small enough to fit Gr 1 and just group them in 4's instead of tables. Just a thought, as those who use tables have the additional job of finding space to store all| the stuff the kids would normally keep in a desk. Check with your principal regarding the supply lists, they are often sent with the previous report card. You'll also need the principal's or your fellow teachers input regarding supply lists before you make up your own - like what does the school supply, what are the other grades asking for, what is permitted in your district. about seatworking your students to death, teach thru activities, songs, poems, collecting, drawing, searching magazines. Get one good tape that teaches the sounds (I like Sesame Street sings a to z) and then search the archives here for abc teaching activities and you'll find tons. Build up your bookmarked sites when you find good ideas. As to first day art, look in the archives for activities with "The Kissing Hand" - its the best first day book there is, and there are tons of ideas if you scroll down just a bit.
