    6th grade discipline

Kim, I taught 6th grade, and a book that helped me was Assertive Discipline by a husband & wife but I can't remember their names. Anyway, what I did that really motivated the kids, is gave team points.

You can give out the points by the row they sit in or the group they're grouped in, but I did it by period. I was in a middle school, and I taught 5 periods, so I made a bulletin board chart, really big, that listed periods 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Then, I made colorful letters S U P E R, and at the end of each period, I decided whether the class had earned aletter. If they had been exemplary, I gave a letter. When a period got to SUPER, I rewarded them with a small prize (candy or homework pass or something).

This really got their competitive juices flowing because each period wanted to be ahead of the others on the SUPER chart. It also had the kids encouraging each other to behave well. I knew it was working because the first thing they did when they walked into class was check their standings compared to all the other periods. Just an idea that worked well for me...good luck!
